Couples' Therapy

Every relationship hits a bump in the road at some point; sometimes it helps to have someone else to offer perspective, insights, and to share skills that foster good communication and ways of thinking about relationships that turn to toward one another again.

I use the Gottman approach to couples work. It is based on sound research, provides a clear structure for identifying the dynamics at play, and offers simple and effective strategies to help you toward healthier ways of interacting.

We will explore both the strengths and challenge areas of your relationship, you'll each have the opportunity to speak with me one on one, and we'll build a plan together to get things back on track. I work both with couples and individuals; if your partner is not on board there are still lots of skills and strategies you can learn that can influence your relationship for the better.

Things that might bring you to Couples' Therapy

Unresolvable Arguments

You talk around in circles but never actually reach an agreement. Maybe it feels like your partner never quite gets the point you're trying to  make or why this is important. Or maybe they're the one constantly bringing up something that seems trivial to you.

Feels Like We're Housemates

It's easy to lose touch with one another's inner worlds amid the demands of everyday life. The little details you loved learning about them early on have changed and you didn't notice or they've grown fuzzy over time.

There was an Incident...

Sometimes we say and do things that cause much deeper hurt than we intend or realise. It can really help to have some structure around processing and resolving these kinds of things.

Seems Like We're Drifting

When we start our relationships we're often full of excitement for the future. Sometimes this gets lost along the way of everyday life and we start to feel like we're drifting along, doing the day-to-day, but not really going anywhere.

Speaking Different Languages

Clear communication is a huge asset in a relationship, and there are skills to effective communication that you can learn to help ensure you are your partner understand one another.

I Can't Do Anything Right

When someone always seems to expect the worst rather than give us the benefit of the doubt it can feel impossible to do anything right so why keep trying? We can start to repair the hurt underlying this "negative perspective" and start rebuilding trust and connection.
